    International audienceThis paper presents mechanical R&D for the CALICE Silicon-tungsten electromagnetic calorimeter. After the physics ECAL prototype tested in 2006 (DESY-CERN) and before the design of different ”module 0” (barrel and end-cap), a technological prototype, called EUDET module, is under study and design in order to have ”full scale” technological solutions which could be used for the final detector (moulding process, thermal cooling, inlet/outlet, integration tools...).     International audienceA detector with a very specific design using liquid Xenon (LXe) in the scintillation mode is studied for Positron Emission Tomography (PET) of small animals. Two prototype modules equipped with Position Sensitive Photo Multiplier Tubes (PSPMTs) operating in the VUV range (178 nm) and at 165 K were built and studied in coincidence. This paper reports on energy, time and spatial resolution capabilities of this experimental test bench. Furthermore, these experimental results were used to perform the first image reconstruction of a 22Na source placed in the experimental setup

    A detector using liquid Xenon (LXe) in the scintillation mode is studied for Positron Emission Tomography (PET) of small animals. Its specific design aims at taking full advantage of the Liquid Xenon scintillation properties. This paper reports on energy, time and spatial resolution capabilities of the first LXe prototype module equipped with a Position Sensitive Photo- Multiplier tube (PSPMT) operating in the VUV range (178 nm) and at 165 K. The experimental results show that such a LXe PET configuration might be a promising solution insensitive to any parallax effect.Comment: 34 pages, 18 pages, to appear in NIM

    This report describes the design of the prototype for an Silicon Tungsten electromagnetic calorimeter with unprecedented high granularity to be operated in a detector at the International Linear Collider (ILC). The R&D for the prototype is co-funded by the European Union in the FP6 framework within the so called EUDET project in the years 2006-2010. The dimensions of the prototype are similar to those envisaged for the final detector. Already at this stage the prototype features a highly compact design. The sensitive layers, the Very Front End Electronics serving 64 channels per ASIC and copper plates for heat draining are integrated within 2000 ÎĽm

    Visual onset expands subjective time

    We report a distortion of subjective time perception in which the duration of a first interval is perceived to be longer than the succeeding interval of the same duration. The amount of time expansion depends on the onset type defining the first interval. When a stimulus appears abruptly, its duration is perceived to be longer than when it appears following a stationary array. The difference in the processing time for the stimulus onset and motion onset, measured as reaction times, agrees with the difference in time expansion. Our results suggest that initial transient responses for a visual onset serve as a temporal marker for time estimation, and a systematic change in the processing time for onsets affects perceived time

    Phase transition between synchronous and asynchronous updating algorithms

    We update a one-dimensional chain of Ising spins of length LL with algorithms which are parameterized by the probability pp for a certain site to get updated in one time step. The result of the update event itself is determined by the energy change due to the local change in the configuration. In this way we interpolate between the Metropolis algorithm at zero temperature for pp of the order of 1/L and for large LL, and a synchronous deterministic updating procedure for p=1p=1. As function of pp we observe a phase transition between the stationary states to which the algorithm drives the system. These are non-absorbing stationary states with antiferromagnetic domains for p>pcp>p_c, and absorbing states with ferromagnetic domains for p≤pcp\leq p_c. This means that above this transition the stationary states have lost any remnants to the ferromagnetic Ising interaction. A measurement of the critical exponents shows that this transition belongs to the universality class of parity conservation.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
